Who Is Morally Responsible When AI Systems Fail? In-Person

Everyone makes mistakes, but who is to blame when an AI system makes a costly one? When a non-human, unpredictable, black box system fails, who is morally culpable for this failure? If the creation and implementation of AI systems entail what the authors call “responsibility gaps” then this is problematic from an ethical point of view, as wronged parties may find compensation or reparations difficult to come by. In this discussion, we will look at various AI responsibility gaps and examine some solutions proposed by the authors to these problems, including the concept of meaningful Human Control of AI systems.
